Uglycon 2016

It’s been a while since my last post, but wanted to share my two pieces that are currently on display at at Giant Robot 2 Gallery for Uglycon 2016, featuring artwork inspired by Uglydolls.

“Uglies in Space” features a “wind chime” like feature with the three figures “floating” in their space shuttle (while actually hanging from string with stars below). There is also a rotating Space Babo. It is laser cut and etched out of wood on a wood canvas, then stained. Measures approximately 17″x 24″.

“Bubble Babo” is a hand (and small tools) sculpted wooden toy figure with five points of articulation – the head, arms and wrists rotate. He is inspired by the Uglydoll Babo character and the video game Bubble Bobble. He features laser etching and measures approximately 6″x 8″x 4″.

Uglycon 2016 will be on display at Giant Robot 2 Gallery in West Los Angeles from July 9 – 27th if you want to check it out. Additionally, all available artwork is for sale on the Giant Robot website. While “Uglies in Space” has been purchased, “Bubble Babo” is still available at this time. Here are some more photos of the other artwork:

Wooden Business Card Holder

Here is a standard business card holder, laser crafted from cherry hardwood and hand finished. Although a simple design, laser engraving can be added to each side to give it extra details and styling. It also is easily disassembled for flat storage/transport.

TP Tissue Box

Here is a wooden tissue box, laser etched with the y-weave pattern that I currently enjoy using. It is laser cut out of birch plywood, then stained in golden oak with a matte finish. With this box, one can insert a roll of toilet paper and then dispense it through the top opening. For those who may want to use toilet paper for other purposes besides in the bathroom, it is more appealing when the roll is placed inside this box dispenser. While this current design is side-loading, future designs may be top-loading instead.

Switzerland Flag Wood Panel

My wife’s cousin wanted some new artwork for her house, so she requested a custom laser piece based on Switzerland and the Swiss flag. Her and her family lived in Switzerland for three years, and she thought it would be fun to have something up that reminded her of that time.

This piece started with a 12″x12″ birch wood panel, which was hand distressed and stained in English Chestnut. The outline of Switzerland was then laser cut out of birch plywood and painted in the style of the Swiss flag. After attaching these together, the result was then finished with a protective gloss coating.

Wooden Brick Man 1 – Laser Etched

Here is a brick man that I recently crafted from mahogany wood. Standing about 10″ tall, he took a while to make since there were so many different pieces, involving a lot of cutting, sanding and even more sanding. I ended up laser etching a Y-Weave pattern on his body, legs and head, then finishing him with a medium stain. He was pretty fun to make, but definitely time consuming. Apple included for scale reference. Stay tuned for the second one I made as well – I have yet to decide about lasering or staining that one.

Dreamy Treats – Wooden Holiday Ornaments

Just released in the beginning of December and sold exclusively at Creme Caramel LA, the “Dreamy Treats” are wooden holiday ornaments inspired by the Creme Caramel LA dessert menu. Sold in sets of 3, each set represents a delicious theme. Laser cut and etched out of walnut hardwood, then hand sanded and finished, these ornaments are sized in the 3″x3″ range. They would look great decorating a tree or other holiday paraphernalia. Be sure to stop by Creme Caramel in Sherman Oaks to pick up a set (or two)! Whats your favorite?
