Uglycon 2016

It’s been a while since my last post, but wanted to share my two pieces that are currently on display at at Giant Robot 2 Gallery for Uglycon 2016, featuring artwork inspired by Uglydolls.

“Uglies in Space” features a “wind chime” like feature with the three figures “floating” in their space shuttle (while actually hanging from string with stars below). There is also a rotating Space Babo. It is laser cut and etched out of wood on a wood canvas, then stained. Measures approximately 17″x 24″.

“Bubble Babo” is a hand (and small tools) sculpted wooden toy figure with five points of articulation – the head, arms and wrists rotate. He is inspired by the Uglydoll Babo character and the video game Bubble Bobble. He features laser etching and measures approximately 6″x 8″x 4″.

Uglycon 2016 will be on display at Giant Robot 2 Gallery in West Los Angeles from July 9 – 27th if you want to check it out. Additionally, all available artwork is for sale on the Giant Robot website. While “Uglies in Space” has been purchased, “Bubble Babo” is still available at this time. Here are some more photos of the other artwork:

Wooden Business Card Holder

Here is a standard business card holder, laser crafted from cherry hardwood and hand finished. Although a simple design, laser engraving can be added to each side to give it extra details and styling. It also is easily disassembled for flat storage/transport.

TP Tissue Box

Here is a wooden tissue box, laser etched with the y-weave pattern that I currently enjoy using. It is laser cut out of birch plywood, then stained in golden oak with a matte finish. With this box, one can insert a roll of toilet paper and then dispense it through the top opening. For those who may want to use toilet paper for other purposes besides in the bathroom, it is more appealing when the roll is placed inside this box dispenser. While this current design is side-loading, future designs may be top-loading instead.

Switzerland Flag Wood Panel

My wife’s cousin wanted some new artwork for her house, so she requested a custom laser piece based on Switzerland and the Swiss flag. Her and her family lived in Switzerland for three years, and she thought it would be fun to have something up that reminded her of that time.

This piece started with a 12″x12″ birch wood panel, which was hand distressed and stained in English Chestnut. The outline of Switzerland was then laser cut out of birch plywood and painted in the style of the Swiss flag. After attaching these together, the result was then finished with a protective gloss coating.

Holiday 2014 Laser Cut Wood Ornaments

Here are some holiday ornaments that I designed and produced in December 2014. One is a kid’s name design and the other a design based on the Golden Gate Bridge. Both are about 3″ round in size and were laser cut out of popular wood. They turned out great for hanging on the Christmas tree.

Wooden Brick Man 1 – Laser Etched

Here is a brick man that I recently crafted from mahogany wood. Standing about 10″ tall, he took a while to make since there were so many different pieces, involving a lot of cutting, sanding and even more sanding. I ended up laser etching a Y-Weave pattern on his body, legs and head, then finishing him with a medium stain. He was pretty fun to make, but definitely time consuming. Apple included for scale reference. Stay tuned for the second one I made as well – I have yet to decide about lasering or staining that one.

Zombie Bruce (Series 1) – The Kicking Dead – Toy Release

The “Zombie Apocalypse” is in full effect, wreaking havoc to communities across the globe. To combat the brain-crazed walkers that are attacking the dwindling population, a mad scientist formulates a plan to create an undead army of his own. Having formulated a cloning process from prior years of research, his plan is to create indestructible zombie clones of legendary heroes from across the ages, sending them into battle. Procuring a prop from a kung fu movie, the scientist is luckily able to extract the DNA he needs for his first trials. “Zombie Bruce” is born and here to protect the world (and kick the crap out of deranged zombies)!

“Zombie Bruce” (Series 1) – The Kicking Dead

-Hand cast in resin, then individually modified and hand painted. Each is unique.

-Limited edition of 12.

-Stands approximately 2.75″ tall.

-Poly-bagged with individually numbered and signed header card.

-Blind bagged before randomly shipped.

*”Zombie Bruce” is a work of parody/satire. I have the utmost respect for Mr. Lee, and create this as a tribute to his undying spirit.

Sneakey – Nike Air Humara

On a hike last year, my pair of Nike Air Humaras started falling apart at the mid sole. It was similar to wearing a pair of flip-flops, but was able to finish the hike anyways. Although they looked in good condition for being over 10 years old, these hiking sneakers had lasted through two trips up Half Done, numerous other hikes, and occasional street wear. It wasn’t too surprising that they were all worn out and done at being sneakers. After a thorough clean up job, it was time to transform them into a Sneakey and this is the result.

Big Boss Robot Wood Key Chains for Giant Robot

Having been a fan of Giant Robot for a long time, I was excited when asked to produce some Big Boss Robot key chains. Even more thrilled that the key chains are showcased as a San Diego Comic-Con 2014 exclusive. Only two dozen of these key chains were laser cut from alder wood, and feature a laser engraved Big Boss Robot head. If you are heading out to Comic-Con, visit the Giant Robot booth #1729 and check out the other cool exclusives there as well.

Toto-ring – Anime Inspired Wood Ring

Been creating prototypes of wooden rings with “hungry” characters, so finally released the “Toto-ring”, which is inspired by a popular Japanese anime character. One side is sleepy, while the other side is hungry and “eating” your finger when you wear it.

They are laser cut and etched from cherry hardwood, then hand sanded. Also finished with a polyurethane coating. Each is individually made and unique due to the nature of wood.

You can order one here at the shop.
